Finding Harmony in Nature with Ashtanga Yoga at Aarambh Community Farm

The morning sun filters softly through coconut leaves as eight practitioners move in quiet unison. There is no music, no rush—only breath, body, and the earth’s subtle hum beneath their mats. This is not a polished studio but a grove where nature itself becomes a co-teacher. At Aarambh Community Farm, Ashtanga yoga takes on a new dimension, inviting students to connect deeply with their practice and the environment around them.

Why Practicing in the Grove Changes Everything

Practicing Ashtanga yoga outdoors at Aarambh Community Farm offers an experience that a traditional studio cannot replicate. Here, the natural world shapes the rhythm and flow of each session.

  • Nature as a Co-Teacher

The gentle sway of coconut trees guides the rhythm of vinyasa sequences. Birdsong marks the inhale and exhale, creating a natural soundtrack that encourages mindfulness. The cool earth beneath the feet anchors standing poses, fostering a grounded connection to the environment.

  • Small Groups for Real Practice

Classes are intentionally kept small, with no more than 12 students. This allows Sandi Higgins, the instructor, to offer hands-on adjustments and personalized pranayama guidance. The Mysore method, known for its self-paced approach, thrives in this intimate setting, enabling practitioners to deepen their understanding and refine their technique.

  • Farm Rhythm Sets the Pace

The daily schedule aligns with the natural cycles of the farm. Sunrise Mysore practice begins at 6:30 AM, followed by a farm-fresh breakfast. Lunch coincides with vegetable harvests, and rest periods respond to the body’s needs. This harmony between yoga and farm life nurtures both physical and mental well-being.

A Typical Morning at Aarambh Community Farm

The day begins with the farm’s rooster crowing at 6:00 AM, gently waking students to a new practice.

  • 6:30 AM – Self-Paced Mysore Practice

Each student moves through the Ashtanga sequence at their own pace, supported by Sandi’s attentive guidance. The quiet grove encourages focus and presence.

  • 8:00 AM – Farm Breakfast

After practice, participants enjoy a breakfast of fresh dosa with coconut chutney, made from ingredients harvested right on the farm.

  • 9:30 AM – Free Time

Students can journal, take a walk through the farm, or simply rest, allowing the morning’s energy to settle.

This routine blends discipline with relaxation, creating a balanced start to the day.
